About Tom's Honey

Tom's Honey began with Tom G. in 1978. He didn't like honey, and even up until his death, he never even tasted Tom’s Honey, but was very interested in the apiary art. He thought everything about bees remarkable.

During work one day, Tom talked to a Mr. Kennedy who worked for the Missouri Extension Society and they discovered a mutual interest in bees. Tom and Mr. Kennedy both ordered hives and bees from the Kelly company in Kentucky. Hives cost around $150 back in 1978, and now they cost over $300. When it was around the time for the bees to arrive, Tom received a phone call at 7am from the post office to pick up the bees before the post office even opened. The buzzing of the bees made the postal employee very nervous! In later years, Tom never wore a face mask and he didn’t even start the smoker. Tom either never got stung much or if he did, he didn't seem to notice.

His son, Tom J. carries on the tradition. He was about four or five when he became interested in bees when his mother squeezed the honey out of the comb.

Nowadays, Tom takes care of bees because it's the right thing to do. Bees are in trouble and small beekeepers have the biggest impact in saving them.
